Other than a mass of tissues, organs, muscle, bones and fluids held together by a porous membrane of skin, what am I? I am dependent upon a pumping muscle to keep the fluids running, air circulating and me alive. I came into existence through the joining of two cells from a million possible combinations. I am unique. There is no other life form which has my exact makeup. I was planned by my parents but is my being here, now, part of a universal plan or just a random event? Life was an accident.
I am one in a family of approximately eight billion people. It took the earth 200,000 years to reach one billion and only 200 years to reach eight billion. (And we joking speak of rabbits multiplying quickly.) My life is always in flux from birth to death. All life ends and one day so will this one.
Beyond race, nationality, gender or creed, I am a finite, physical manifestation borne of an infinite energy which will have its investment in my life returned upon my death. I still do not know if the source of that energy is a god or gods, the big bang, gravity, love, or merely unknown but I do know I am here. All of life as we know it has this same source be it plant, mammal, reptile, fowl, bird or fish. But what am I? I am human. In the end that too becomes only a word.
