If our leaders seek to conceal the truth, or we as people become accepting of alternative realities that are no longer grounded in facts, then we as American citizens are on a pathway to relinquishing our freedom…When we as people, a free people, go wobbly on the truth even on what may seem the most trivial matters, we go wobbly on America…A responsibility of every American citizen to each other is to preserve and protect our freedom by recognizing what truth is and is not, what a fact is and is not and begin by holding ourselves accountable to truthfulness and demand our pursuit of America’s future be fact-based — not based on wishful thinking, not hoped-for outcomes made in shallow promises, but with a clear-eyed view of the facts as they are, and guided by the truth that will set us free to seek solutions to our most daunting challenges.

There is something about lies that causes many to want to believe them as truth. Maybe it has something to do with the human desire to make the impossible, possible. It was Joseph Goebbels, a speech writer for Adolph Hitler and who later, after Hitler’s suicide, succeeded him as Chancellor of Germany. He held the post for one day before he and his wife committed suicide after poisoning their six children with cyanide who said:
Make the lie big, keep it simple, keep saying it and eventually they will believe it.
This policy was closely adhered to by Donald Trump. It is estimated during his four years as President of the United States he told over thirty thousand lies to the American people. He was a creature who took credit for everything deemed to be good, (the fact of no major airline crashes occurred in the year he took office) and blamed others for everything that backfired in his face, (the separation of children from their parents at the border with Mexico which he tried to blame of the Obama Administration but which was instituted in fact by his own administration).
Although his lies fed the flames of anger among his followers and damaged his relationship with much of the nation, and the world, it was his supporters in Congress and the public officials who backed his bold lies and conspiracy theories which broadened the gap in American society. He was the little boy who cried wolf and until his removal from office in the verified election of November 2020, many citizens believed him and still do even after his defeat. Before becoming a drum major for Trump and his deranged and deplorable terrorists followers, Ted Cruz said of him in 2016:
I’m going to tell you what I really think of Donald Trump. This man is a pathological liar. He doesn’t know the difference between truth and lies. He lies with practically every word that comes out of his mouth and in a pattern that I think is straight out of a psychology textbook, his response is to accuse everybody else of lying… I say pathological because I actually think Donald, if you hooked him up to a lie detector test, he could say one thing in the morning, one thing at noon and one thing in the evening, all contradictory and he’d pass the lie detector test each time. Whatever lie he’s telling, at that minute he believes it, but the man is utterly amoral.
The Big Lie started even before the election took place. Trump, perhaps in anticipation of his impending loss of a second term planted the seeds of election mistrust and voter fraud right after his victory in 2016. He could not accept the factual evidence of his loss of the popular vote to Hilary Clinton by 300,000 voters. He attempted to end mail in ballots, even as he used one to vote in Florida from Washington D.C. and even during a worldwide pandemic. If he had won by the landslide he claims, do you thing he would still had claimed voter fraud?
All his claims were proven to be unsupported by facts all the way to the Supreme court. The Supreme court was stacked with his appointees and yet refused to even entertain his briefs. Still he continues his lies. A liar has no choice. If Trump concedes the election he lost to Joe Biden, then all his previous lies would come to light as the lies they were and he would be exposed as the true liar he is. It is his nature to lie. For him his lies are his truth.
His own party members refused to be intimidated by his calls to overturn the election results. He offered no proof of fraud because there was none to be had. The little Trump who cried wolf had to keep crying wolf. His blind followers and some members of Congress began to even see the invisible, imagined wolf because they could not accept the truth of his loss. In the end the American people loss, Congress was invaded, and the lies of a deranged man carried more weight than the truth. Trump and those who emboldened him embraced and perpetuated dangerous lies that threatened the halls of Congress, the democracy of a nation, and the lives of citizens he was sworn to defend. Speaking of those in Congress who failed to question his lies and conspiracy theories, Arnold Schwarzenegger said:
They are complicit with those who carried the flag of self-righteous insurrection into the Capitol. We need public servants that serve something larger than their own power or their own party.
Best of luck Joe and Kamala. I have faith in you both. You are the change our nation voted for. You are the change our nation needs to prevent more of this chaos.
